Watch Customs: Immigrant money seizure Video Customs: Immigrant money seizure
May 23, 2012
A routine check of a foreign visitor leaving the UK uncovered a large amount of cash on him which he could not prove was legal and was therefore seized by HM Customs. The explanation he gave to the Customs officer was that he had earned the money and was using it to build a house in Eritrea in Eastern Africa. However he was unable to provide any paperwork to show the money was legitimate and had come through a bank. What was also suspicious was that despite being told when the money was seized that he would be able to claim it back simply by providing documentation to show it was legal money, he never did so, and instead proceeded on his flight to Africa without the cash. It's likely this was either money earned illegally as an illegal immigrant worker, or even more likely drugs money, or cash generated from some other criminal activity such as prostitution. The Netherlands is well known to a main source of drugs (particularly Cannabis) from the continent into the UK. Why wasn't the man detained and questioned by police? Further enquiries should of been carried out into where the money came from and where he had been living, what he was doing in the UK etc. Very lapse handling here. In all probability he was a criminal or money carrier for a criminal operation, and was allowed to go free. Another issue here...this man is clearly an immigrant from outside the EU but has entered the UK as an EU citizen which gives him the automatic right to live and work here. The UK's ...

The unauthorized immigrant population in the United States has tripled from 3.5 million people in 1990 to more than 11 million in 2010. Stepped-up patrols along the border with Mexico—the source of 60 percent of unauthorized immigrants—has had little impact. Why? Border enforcement does not get to the root of why people leave their home countries: to escape poverty. In 2009, 96 percent of US foreign assistance to Mexico was spent on military and drug enforcement. Investing in rural areas instead can help reduce the pressure to migrate.

Almost everywhere on the world, international migration is a hot topic. Most of the time the debate about migration is fierce and charged with prejudices and fears. At the political level, this has far-reaching consequences, ranging from electoral victories of populist right-wing parties to the increasing isolation policy of Europe and the United States. But what exactly is migration? What are its causes? And what are problems and opportunities? February 2007 The illegal immigration route from Africa to Europe is one of the most dangerous journeys in the world. In this exclusive report, we accompany a group risking all in pursuit of the European dream. "This is suicide. God protect us", despairs one man. They're only a few hours into their long journey from Mali to Mauritania. Already, they've been beaten by policeman looking for bribes and now their driver is demanding more money. If they don't pay, he'll leave them in the Sahara, 20 km from the nearest town. After three days they arrive near the Algerian border. But some of the immigrants have run out of money. "I'm desperate. I don't know what I'm going to do", laments one. He'll be left at this border town without even money for water. For the rest, the most dangerous part of their journey is just about to begin. Other migrants, still traumatised by their experience, describe what happened to them. "We didn't realise there was something wrong with our boat until we were off the coast of Morocco", states one. "They put water in our petrol cans. Twenty people drowned". He's had enough and wants to go home. But most have heard stories like this before. They refuse to be put off. As one states; "for me, it's Europe or death".
